Jon Pertwee was born on 7th July 1919 in Chelsea, London. After serving as an officer in the Royal Navy, Jon began acting on the stage and starred in several productions including A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and There's a Girl in My Soup. He appeared in many Carry On films and had various television roles before being cast as the third incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who in 1969 by producer Peter Bryant. His other notable role is that of Worzel Gummidge in the children's television series of the same name. He passed away on 20th May 1996, aged 76.
