William Hartnell was born on 8th January 1908 in London. Initially a theatre actor, over the course of his fascinating career he appeared in over 70 films and made countless television appearances, though he is best known for his portrayal of the First Doctor. He passed away on 23rd April 1975, aged 67.

At 5:15pm on Saturday 23rd November 1963, Doctor Who aired on BBC One for the first time. An audience of 4.4 million tuned in as, in the opening episode, An Unearthly Child, William Hartnell stepped out of a mysterious police box, and into the shoes of an enigmatic time traveller known only as 'the Doctor'. A mysterious figure and tremendously knowledgeable, viewers weren't to be fooled by his old appearance. And the rest, as they say, is history...
